2023-2024, stainless steel sculpture
40 x 20 x 72cm

The work uses 100 percent stainless steel. Xiao employs archival couture techniques to fabrique by hand, sculpted from one single piece of extremely fine graded stainless steel material. Through deliberate hand treatments such as notching, draping, slashing, pleating, molding and tucking, Xiao pursued the architecetual construction according to the material’s natural fluid properties. Technique-wise, it explores the high art of couture making and applies it as an artistic instrument beyond functional expertise.

This piece was made entirely of one piece of fabric, with the collar meeting at the back of the neck and flowing into the waist,  gathering at the hem of the skirt. The highly architectural design relies solely on the use of fabric, without any internal support structures. The contour and fabric texture are ingeniously combined, and the recesses and protrusions of the pleat folds are precisely measured to reflect the unique charm of the different sections of the body. The seams, which are entirely handmade, are hidden in the folds, blending in to be one with the fabric.
